Altar Servers are integral participants in liturgical celebrations. Altar Servers can be youth or adult members who are trained to assist the clergy to prepare for and during liturgical celebrations. Dedicated youth and adults who have received the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist are eligible to become Altar Servers.
Common duties for altar servers include holding the processional cross and candles, liturgical books, the thurible, the lavabo bowl and towel, bringing various vessels to and from the altar to assist the priest and deacon, and ringing bells.
ALTAR SERVER TRAINING
All youth servers should attend monthly training sessions to develop and strengthen their knowledge and skills.
Youth server practices are generally scheduled on the third Saturday of each month.
All servers will receive a white alb that must be worn during liturgical celebrations. Servers will also wear a cincture aligned to the colors of the liturgical calendar.
ALTAR SERVER SCHEDULE
Altar servers will be placed on a rotating schedule and can expect to be scheduled for any weekend liturgical celebration. Volunteers will be solicited to serve at weekday celebrations such as Holy Days of Obligation. Any server who is unable to serve on a scheduled date or at a scheduled time should seek a replacement.
The ministry's Youth and Adult Contact Roster is posted in Classroom #3. This is a ready resource for finding substitute servers.
When scheduled to serve, Altar Servers (and parents of youth servers), should plan to arrive at mass 20 minutes prior to the start of mass.
