St. Joseph’s Youth Ministry (SJYM) Black History Month Program
On February 20, 2022 the SJYM presented a skit, “Call to Worship” written by SJYM members, Ms. Hayden Hernly and Ms. Kentina Nnawuba, which centered on God and black history. The story allowed all to rewind, visit the 1800’s and follow the characters as they traversed through the difficulties they faced as slaves during that time. How did black people worship back then? Could they worship without being berated by those around them? By the power of their trust and faith in the Lord, the characters are able to efficiently answer questions from one young daughter, Shayla, through their Bible study, which provided guidance to themselves and Shayla as well. The take away message was that if black people could worship during slavery, we can definitely worship now amidst our challenging times. Even Harriet Tubman’s strength came from her faith in God which helped keep her and the slaves she escorted safe during their trips. The same could be said for Martin Luther King (MLK), Mary McLeod Bethune, and Howard Thurman, all who are said to have linked their accomplishments to their trust in God.
The Spoken Word, “What I’ve Always Had,” was presented by the SJYM members Ms. Chinemelum Nwabinelli and Ms. Hope Tiwang, cracking down on what prayer is, how it is taught and understood. The poem had an emphasis on how our religion is usually learned from our parents and at times people might not be able to have a strong connection to the Lord despite growing up with the religion. Breaking it down to how to pray, having a connection with God will always be the first step to being Catholic. Some may not know where to start when it comes to prayer. The poem gave a little hint on how to start: “To the left not to the right Bow your heads close your eyes''
Throughout the program, the SJYM musical ensemble guide prayerful singing. The amazing musical solo presented by Ms. Blessing Ezebuiro “His Eye is on the Sparrow”, was inspired by Psalms and the Gospel of Matthew. It reminds us that God is always watching, always has and always will. He has a plan for everything is according to His Will.
