The architectural firm of Walton and Madden was contracted to draw preliminary plans. These included a church to accommodate seven hundred persons, four classrooms for catechetical instruction and an office for the director of the School of Religion. A large hall also was provided for parish affairs with a modern kitchen adjacent. The cost of the projected plant was $465,000.
In the Fall of 1965, a fund drive was inaugurated that resulted in pledges of $120,000. The former site of St. Joseph was sold to the town of Glenarden for $70,000. When a substantial sum had been accumulated, the ground-breaking ceremonies were held on Saturday, March 19, 1967, the feast of the patron saint of the parish. Construction began and by the Fall of 1967, classes were held in the School of Religion.
The first mass at the new St Joseph Church was offered on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 23, 1967. The priests moved into the renovated rectory on Saturday, December 2, 1967 and church services began on a regular schedule on Sunday, December 3, the first Sunday of Advent.
